2016 Harp seal season postponed
Cap-aux-Meules, January 25th 2016- Initially planned from February 24th to March 9th 2016, the harp seal season has been postponed to February 24th to March 11th 2017. The actual weather conditions are not favourable for a solid and secure ice to be formed, which is necessary for our harp seal watching activities. We have consulted with the experts, notably with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and there is no cold front expected in the weather forecast for the next few weeks. The last El Nino manifestation of this scale was in 1998.
“Unlike 2011, we now have the advantage to inform our clients well in advance and give them the chance to reorganize. And to our greater pleasure, some have still decided to come live the winter experience in the Iles de la Madeleine”, says Gino Thorne, manager of the Hôtels Accents (Château Madelinot and Auberge Madeli).
The decision to postpone the season is mainly based on the fact that the harp seal watching activities would not be safe in these conditions. We would like to extend our apologies to our clients and partners and to let it be known that we are already actively planning for the 2017 season.
Ice chart on January 19th 2016.
White/blue less than 15 cm of ice or open water, pink/purple is newly formed ice. Usually, we should see mostly red
